Book: The Dragonfly Sea

[Translate to English:] Cover

The new novel by Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor takes the reader into the world of the young Ayaana and her mother. The book review appeared in the current Africa Bulletin.

The stubborn little Ayaana lives with her mother Munira on an island off the coast of Kenya. When an old sailor settles in the neighborhood, Ayaana finds something she has always longed for: a father. But as she grows up, Ayaana has to leave her imaginary world of adventure, knowledge and pleasure - she has to cope with events that change not only her but the whole island: strangers with dubious pasts appear, religious extremists seek refuge on the island, China reaches out to Africa, and a tsunami hits the island and nature takes its toll. So Ayaana decides to seek her fortune far away and to start studying in China. She embarks on a dangerous voyage, which is one thing above all: a journey to herself. After magical opening chapters, the encounters become more and more adventurous and extreme, Ayaana becomes confused in the strangeness of these other lives - and finally in the real relationships of her origin to regain a foothold on the island.
