Concert: Keenan Ahrends Quintet - Perseverance

This high-calibre quintet builds on the South African trio of band leader Keenan Ahrends and presents the album recorded during a residency in Basel in 2021.

Keenan Ahrends

Perseverance and faith in the future were bitterly needed to survive the years of the pandemic as a musician. Keenan Ahrends takes us on a very personal and emotional journey through a difficult time marked by loneliness and individual wandering, which ended in a wonderful collaboration. On the one hand, there is the well-rehearsed rhythm section consisting of the equally sensitive and expressive bassist Romy Brauteseth and the drummer Sphelelo Mazibuko, who understands equally well how to keep the band on course on its explorations and to colour with his brushes the space it creates. The legendary saxophonist Domenic Landolf and the strong trumpeter Lukas Thoeni, on the other hand, harmonise ideally with their South African partners, expand the soundscapes, and know how to preserve the intimacy that Ahrend's compositions live on - and so this project ideally combines the qualities of a trio with those of a quintet.
