The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies’ Fellowship Programs provide a unique setting for researchers from all disciplines to fully focus on their projects within an international community. FRIAS fellowships are open to both early-career and senior researchers from Freiburg, Germany, and all over the world, supporting dedicated research time, interdisciplinary collaboration, and access to University of Freiburg resources.

Fellows receive a monthly living allowance, with additional funding for accommodation and a mobility allowance to cover travel costs. Office spaces, library access, and tailored support for specific needs may also be provided. Further information is available on the specific program pages.

FRIAS invites applications for its fellowship programs for the academic year 2027/28. The call is open to researchers from all disciplines and nationalities from Freiburg, Germany and abroad who hold a doctoral degree.

The following formats are available:

• Early Career Fellowships (4–10 months) for researchers up to eight years after completing their PhD;
• Senior Fellowships (3–8 months) for scholars with at least eight years of postdoctoral research experience;
• One Sustainable Governance Fellowship (6 months) for researchers based at African institutions in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
