Die Afrikaforschung in Basel blickt auf eine lange Tradition in diversen Institutionen in der Region zurück und wird durch das Bekenntnis der Universität Basel zur Forschung zu, in, mit und für Afrika weiter gefördert. Unser Zentrum ist die Schnittstelle für den Austausch zwischen den verschiedenen Disziplinen und Fakultäten sowie den ausseruniversitären Partnerinstitutionen im Forschungsnetzwerk Afrika.
Auf der Grundlage der vorhandenen Kompetenzen und Forschungsinteressen setzt das Forschungsnetzwerk Afrika Schwerpunkte in sechs Forschungsbereichen. Zudem verfügen die angeschlossenen Fachbereiche, Departemente und Institutionen über jeweils eigene Forschungsprofile.

Die Forschung in den fünf Kernbereichen trägt dazu bei, wichtige Lücken im Verständnis des raschen Wandels afrikanischer Gesellschaften zu schliessen, konzeptionelle und methodische Herausforderungen in der interdisziplinären und disziplinären Forschung anzugehen und die sozioökonomische Entwicklung auf dem Kontinent voranzutreiben.
