Job: Assistant Professor in African Studies

Applications are invited for joint appointment as tenure-track Assistant Professor in African Studies in the Faculty of Arts (as tenure home) and the Faculty of Social Sciences (Ref.: 492588), to commence on September 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree and should be specialists in Africa-China relations in an Arts/Humanities discipline such as History, African Studies, or a Social Science discipline such as Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Political Science, Social Policy, Social Work, and Sociology. They should demonstrate a strong interdisciplinary orientation and promise of excellence in both teaching and research.

The appointee will be responsible for teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, mentoring students, and contributing to building the curriculum of both the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences. He/She must exhibit promise of leadership and vision, possess an excellent research agenda, and be ready to assume administrative responsibilities as appropriate. 

In addition, the appointee will contribute to the University of Hong Kong’s Africa-China relations cluster. While contributing to teaching and research in the African Studies programme, he/she will also collaborate within the School of Modern Languages and Cultures’ China Studies unit, an interdisciplinary programme based in both the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences.  Enquiries about the post should be sent to Dr. Facil Tesfaye (African Studies) (e-mail: ftesfaye@clutterhku.hk).

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
