Job: Lecturer African Studies

The African Studies Section (ASS), in the School of African and Gender Studies, Anthropology and Linguistics (AXL), seeks to appoint a permanent suitably qualified candidate from February 1, 2020 or soon thereafter.
The ASS is a growing section within the School, playing a leading role in introducing critical pedagogies and epistemological questions aimed at stimulating new research and knowledge. In the context of the call to decolonise the higher education curriculum in South Africa and the continent, African Studies actively participates in creating the foundation for decolonised teaching, research and knowledge production that can effectively contribute to the transformation of higher education. In pursuit of this, African Studies takes, for example, a critical perspective to topics such as public culture, heritage and memory; questions accepted approaches to the archive and curation, develops new approaches to African literature and culture, critiques agrarian studies and approaches to land reform and redistribution. The recently introduced undergraduate programme include, among others, African Political Economy, African Political Thought, Language, Power and Freedom: Practices and Ideologies, as well as Representations of Africa.
The successful candidate for this position is expected to participate fully in all academic activities of the African Studies Section, including the introduction of critical pedagogies through teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and supervision of postgraduate students, and research.
Requirements
- Be in possession of a PhD in African Studies or related fields, or close to completion
- Experience of teaching in higher education
- An emerging publication and research profile
- Experience in supervision will be an advantage
Responsibilities
- Teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Supervision of postgraduate students
- Convening undergraduate and postgraduate courses
- Ability to conduct independent research
- Contribute towards the administration of the programmes offered in the section
The annual cost of employment for this position in 2019, including benefits, at Lecturer level is R683 358
