Job: Opening Assistant Professor in Anthropology, full time

The Center for Asian and African Studies (CEAA, by its initials in Spanish) at El Colegio de México invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Anthropology, with a regional focus on Subsaharan Africa. The preferred candidates will be anthropologically trained and will demonstrate interest in and ability to carry out research and teaching, at graduate level, in general methodology and theory courses related to current trends in social anthropology and the social sciences, as well as specialist courses relating to topics such as tradition and modernity in African contexts, Subsaharan African knowledge systems, cultural hybridity, identity and displacements, and/or past and present trends in Subsaharan religious histories, movements and contexts. The range of possible research and teaching interests is open but should include at least one or more of the abovementioned themes, with preference in West and/or Central Africa.

  1. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor, with a regional focus on Subsaharan Africa.
  2. Previous docent experience (T.A., etc.), and publications in specialist scholarly journals and/or with editorial houses.
  3. Fluency in at least one Subsaharan African language, preferably from West or Central Africa.
  4. A working knowledge of Spanish is desirable, but non-Spanish speaking applicants would have to commit to learning Spanish within 3 years of their hire. In the meantime, they are welcome to teach in either English or French.
  5. A willingness to engage in teaching, research and thesis supervision, as well as collaborative ventures with other faculty members and, at various times, to take on a reasonable amount of administrative duties.
  6. A three-year minimum commitment to our institution.
