Call for applications: 2020 MA scholarships: Southern African literature – Hydrocolonial perspectives
Hydrocolonialism
This exciting project aims to rethink literary form in relation to water in southern Africa literatures. Using the rubric of hydrocolonialism, the project aims to chart new genealogies, definitions of region and interpretation of genre. The term hydrocolonialism builds on postcolonial literary theory but attempts to add water and depth to this field which (with the exception of Caribbean studies) has largely been land-focused. This concept aims to account for the consequences of colonialism and the material meanings of water in relation to literary form.
We are seeking applications from students working in literary studies, cultural and media studies, visual arts, creative writing and related fields.
MA R90 000 p.a.
Eligibility
1. Accepted to Wits for 2020 admission into MA by coursework (MA by research may be eligible)
2. Have/develop a research project that speaks to the themes of the project
3. South African and permanent residents (non-South Africans may be eligible)
Required documents
1. Proposed research project (1-2 pages)
2. CV and covering letter including why you should be offered the scholarship
3. At least one academic reference letter or contact details of a referee
4. Wits person number (with a valid completed 2020 online application)
Successful applicants will be required to audit/enroll for a course on Underwater Aesthetics.
