Call for applications: MIASA Fellowships (Individual and Tandem Fellowships) and Interdisciplinary Fellow Groups

For the academic year 2022/23, the Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) offers up to ten Individual Fellowships as well as two Tandem Fellowships at the University of Ghana. Furthermore, MIASA invites pre-proposals for Interdisciplinary Fellow Groups (IFG) for the period 2023-2024. Application deadline is 15 November 2021 for Individual and Tandem Fellowships and 15 December 2021 for IFGs.

The Maria Sibylla Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) is broadly dedicated to research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, with ‘Sustainable Governance’ as its central, but by no means exclusive topic. Overarching aims of MIASA are working towards a reduction of global asymmetries in knowledge production and bridging the cultural divide between anglophone, francophone and lusophone Africa. The Institute offers time and space for supporting innovative academic projects in the Humanities and Social Sciences of top international quality. MIASA supports these projects via different kinds of fellowships: individual fellowships, tandem fellowships with one tandem partner from Germany and the other from Africa, and fellowships as members of Interdisciplinary Fellow Groups (IFG).

Individual Fellowships

The present call is for up to ten (10) individual residential fellowships for 3-12 months each for the academic year 2022/2023 (August 2022 to July 2023). The call is open to both junior and senior researchers.

Tandem Fellowships

The present call is for up to two (2) tandem residential fellowships for 3-5 months each for the academic year 2022/2023 (August 2022 to July 2023). A tandem residential fellowship at MIASA is comprised of two researchers – one from Africa and one from Germany. They apply as a team for working together on a particular research topic, addressing MIASA’s overarching aims. The call is open to both junior and senior researchers.

Interdisciplinary Fellow Groups

The present call is for pre-proposals for Interdisciplinary Fellow Groups (IFGs) for the period from 2023 to 2024. Each year, MIASA hosts two IFGs, one from 1 February to 31 May, and the other from 1 September to 31 December. IFGs are MIASA’s central instrument fostering original research on ‘Sustainable Governance’ and its connected thematic areas as mentioned above. An IFG brings together a group of four to six fellows, including a convenor and a co-convenor. One of the two convenors is expected to be from the University of Ghana. The applicant of the pre-proposal can serve as either convenor or co-convenor of the full application. IFGs are interdisciplinary and international.
