Mehrere Einheiten im Forschungsnetzwerk Afrika bieten Workshops und Forschungsseminare an, die sich insbesondere an Doktorierende und Postdocs richten, teilweise aber für alle Interessierten offen sind.

Colloquium Namibian and Southern African Studies

The Research Colloquium provides a forum for local and international scholars to engage in cross- disciplinary and methodological debates in Southern African Studies, with particular reference to Namibian Studies. It is jointly offered with the Department of Geography, History & Environmental Studies, University of Namibia in online sessions and is open to all levels. Guests are welcome.

Research Seminar African History

The research seminar African History is a forum for MA and doctoral students as well as postdocs from Basel to discuss their ongoing projects. In addition, international scholars are invited to present their research in the field of African History. The research seminar is open to all students, staff members, and guests with an interest in the history of Africa.

Colloquium Social Anthropology

Anyone who is working on a master's thesis, dissertation, habilitation or other major project in Anthropology is invited to present.

Urban Matters

This is a platform for PhD candidates, postdocs but also advanced Masters’ students sharing a theoretical or methodological research interest in matters of the urban - or spatial questions more broadly - as they intersect with their individual fields (Anthropology, Gender Studies, various Area Studies, Human Geography, Urban Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology , Linguistics, etc).

Reversing the Gaze: Comparison and Beyond

This is an interdisciplinary forum to reflect on methodological, conceptual and theoretical issues related to knowledge production in Area Studies and comparative social sciences. The focus of this semester is on methodological and conceptual issues concerning comparison. Guests are welcome.

This colloquium assists Master’s and PhD students in developing their research question and methodological framework

Methodological Challenges in African Studies – “… in Progress”

The purpose of the workshop is to bring PhD students together to discuss the progress of their work. In addition to the forum’s comments, each participant will receive individual feedback by the convenor. The participant’s response will then be discussed in a separate meeting. It consists of three parts, (I) Thinking in Progress, (II) Researching in Progress and (III) Writing in Progress. The one day event will be scheduled at the end of the semester.

Advanced Studies in Autoethnography

Autoethnography is an approach to research and writing that seeks to describe and systematically analyze personal experience in order to understand cultural experience.

Colloquium Intercultural Theology

A forum for the presentation and discussion of ongoing research projects and doctoral/postdoctoral theses.

Colloqium Theory and Politics

A forum for PhD candidates interested in social theory and its political implications. The focus of this semester is on the anthropology of media and technology.

 

Language and writing courses

Swahili I

This language course, designed in cooperation with the Institute of Social Anthropology, is for beginners with none or just little knowledge of Swahili.

Get it done: practical advice, strategies and support to finish your dissertation or article

This course aims at supporting members of the Graduate School of Social Sciences (G3S) in finalizing their PhD theses. Key topics include time management, strategies and tricks for the final revision process, help with administrative issues and peer support. Additionally, there will be room to reflect on individual problems, practical and emotional challenges and solution strategies.

Writing to Be Published – Academic Writing Conventions and Style

This intensive course teaches you how to turn your papers into publishable articles. It is aimed at researchers and academics who publish in English, or want to publish in English, but feel insecure about their command of the subtleties of convention and style.

Writing for Publication in the Social Sciences and Humanities

Writing publications in correct, clear, coherent and convincing language is a vital competence that can be acquired. In this hands-on workshop participants develop that competence and generate submittable text through structured collaborative write - review - revise cycles.

Writing for peer-reviewed journals in 10 easy steps

In this course, participants learn how to select a suitable publishing outlet, write a first draft of a manuscript, review manuscripts based on feedback from other course participants, and respond to reviewers’ comments. Throughout the course, one illustrative paper will be developed, step-by-step.

Increase Your Wordpower – English Rhetoric and Presentation

This workshop aims at developing the participants’ communicative-rhetorical competence in English (and, by transfer, also in other languages).

Writing Attractive CVs and Cover Letters

The workshop is aimed at PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows who wish to train their ability to write employment applications that could give them an edge over other applicants in the competitive job market.
