Interdisciplinary 5-Week MOOC: "Examining African Contributions to Global Health"
The history of science has largely been written from the perspective of the Global North. This has meant that the impact of the Global South has been neglected and undervalued. This five-week course will uncover the innovation and excellence that Africa has brought to global health over time.
Africa has always been a site of medical innovation but for too long this has not been adequately acknowledged and examined. This interdisciplinary five-week Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) was created by the team members of the Sinergia Project “African Contributions to Global Health” and members of the ZASB network.
Africa has been at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19, having contributed 12.8% of the technologies used to respond to the pandemic. As you will learn in the case studies, many African countries have overcome health challenges using innovative solutions that can benefit the world. You’ll explore theories, financing solutions, and technologies from Africa that can be used to uplift health systems across the world.
The course offers you a unique Africanist perspective and insights into different disciplines such as public health, urban planning, and history. Learners acquaint themselves with various tools, methodologies and theories and benefit from experts at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, the Department of History at the University of Basel, the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and experts interviewed in various African countries. Thereby learners familiarise themselves with innovations that benefit public health not only in Africa but in other parts of the world as well as globally. Discuss knowledge circulation, interdependence between environmental factors and people's health in African cities and explore African health financing.
The course will start on 03 October.
