Call for papers: "Media and communication in transition: A call to action"

3rd Namibia Media and Communication Conference (NMCC), University of Namibia, 20-21 September 2026

With the planned appointment of the Information Commissioner to actualize the Access to Information legislation, the changing of guards – Jonathan Beukes taking over from Tangeni Amupadhi as the Editor of The Namibian newspaper and Menesia Muinjo (first female Director General) in the saddle at the national broadcaster in place of Stanley Similo etc. –, these are interesting times in the Namibia’s media and communication space. In addition, the Department of Digital Arts and Animation has come on board at the Namibian University of Science and Technology while, at the University of Namibia, there have been unprecedented enrollments in the BA, MA, MPhil and PhD in Media and communication programs after approvals were gotten from the regulatory authorities. The third edition of the NMCC is set to interrogate these happenings within the backdrop of regional, continental and global media as well as communication trends to assist the country navigate and stay on top in this space.

Based on these scenarios, the University of Namibia invites submissions for papers, panel proposals, posters, media and communication productions (students’ works are particularly welcomed). Submissions may address and are not limited to the areas outlined below:

  • Media and communication education;
  • Media and communication in the AI age;
  • Namibian and African films coming into their own;
  • Making indigenous language media great again;
  • Community media and news deserts;
  • Extending the frontiers of indigenous communication;
  • African journalism, creator economies and platform companies;
  • Professionalism of media and communication in Africa;
  • Corporate communication in the shared media era;
  • Trends in products and cause advertising;
  • Digital policy and regulatory dilemmas;
  • Access to Information: Laws and experiences;
  • Management and sustainability of legacy media;
  • Changing news ecosystems;
  • Charting the future for media and communication.
