Films: Africa knows!

Africa knows! offers African film productions during their three-month conference (2 December 2020 - 28 February 2021).

Africa knows! is an online initiative organized by the Leiden Studies Assembly. The program includes a variety of event forms, ranging from keynote speeches, blog posts and a small film selection.

  • Somalinimo (Alice Aedy, 2020) follows a British-Somali woman at the University of Cambridge, who reflects her heritage, identity and social environment in conversations with other women.
  • River Nomads (Éric Hahonou, 2016) documents the life of nomad fishermen along their way from Northern Nigeria to Niger and Mali.
  • Hope(less). Biographies of Radicalization (Mirjam de Bruijn and Sjoerd Sijsma, 2019) traces two researchers who look for people having lived through violent experiences in Chad and Mali and by doing so, become radicalized themselves.
  • From Trash to Treasure, Turning Negatives into Positives (Lara Lee, 2020) follows the artist Nthabiseng TeReo Mohanela who turns plastic into art in his home country Lesotho.
