Job: Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Fellow in Political Science or Related Fields with Focus on East Africa (50%)

Geneva Graduate Institute

The SNSF-sponsored research project "FamilEA: The Remaking of the Family in East Africa" seeks to understand the dynamics of family transformation in East Africa (Kenya and Uganda). FamilEA’s core data includes a quantitative-qualitative survey, conducted in the two East African capitals of Kampala and Nairobi, which documents the size and changing structure of families along a number of parameters.

The postdoctoral fellow will help to unravel the tensions between legal/policy dispositions, on the one hand, and social realities on the other hand. Their work, developed through the prism of an individual project, will synthesize major trends in existing family-related policies in East Africa and draw attention to entanglements between legislation, public policies, and on-the-ground actions that affect family arrangements and compositions. They will engage FamilEA’s qualitative-quantitative survey data and help to set the forms of observed family constellations against those recognized within political and policy discourse. In addition to the scholarly input of their individual project, the postdoctoral fellow will work closely with the FamilEA team.
