Raquel Varela: Colonialism and Migration in the Portuguese Lusophone World – A Global History

Global Conversations

Raquel Varela is a researcher at the Instituto de História Contemporânea (IHC) of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (Lisbon New University), where she coordinates the Study Group on Labour and Social Conflicts.

In her talk, Raquel Varela will discuss the effects of globalization on the labour force and the effects of changes in labour force on globalization from the first attempts at effective colonization of the African territory and the massive migration of Portuguese workers to Brazil to changes in the work force in Portugal throughout the last four decades, within the frame of the country's integration in the EU. Some of the questions that will be raised are: To what extent did empire structures determine the regulation and migration of labour in the Portuguese Empire from the eighteenth to the twentieth century? How can we connect in history time-space-labour and international relations to help to understand the historical development of an empire?

The number of seats is reduced due to current safety and hygiene measures and limited to members of the University of Basel. External guests may attend virtually (https://unibas.zoom.us/j/3609632017; Meeting-ID: 360 963 2017).
