Webinar: "Facing Famine" - Crisis in the Gambos region of Southern Angola

Amnesty International, United Kingdom

Timed to mark Earth Day, the event will highlight the escalating food crisis being faced by the people of the Gambos region of Southern Angola, a situation created by the combined impact of land seizures and climate change.  The 77,000 Vanyaneke and Ovaherero pastoralists, who have lived in this region for many generations, have in recent years seen 67% of communal grazing lands, which once mitigated against the impact of drought, allocated to commercial cattle farmers.  This appropriation of fertile land has been carried out by the Angolan government, in contravention of the country's lands rights legislation and without consultation or recompense to the communities affected.

Panelists:
  • PADRE JACINTO PIO – Human Rights Defender & Gambos Community Spokesperson
  • CHIPILICA BARBOSA – Southern Africa Climate Change Specialist, SASSCAL
  • ROBIN PALMER – Southern Africa Land Rights Policy Specialist, Mokoro
  • CAMILE CORTES & DAVID MATSINHE – Amnesty International’s Campaigner & Researcher for Angola
